Finer and softer to the touch: A Journey into the World of Men's Tailoring

Discovering the Craftsmanship, Quality Fabrics, and Personalization of Tailored Clothing

Vitale Barberis Canonico - Franc and suit

Are you tired of wearing mass-produced clothing that doesn't fit you perfectly or express your personal style? Maybe it's time to venture into a tailor's shop and experience the world of bespoke clothing.

Walking into a tailor's shop for the first time can be a daunting experience, especially if you're used to buying ready-to-wear suits, jackets, and pants. You might think there's less choice than in your typical store, and you're not sure what to expect. But once you step inside, you'll realize that this is where you'll find unique and high-quality pieces that are designed to fit you like a glove.

As you make your way through the store, one of the salesmen dressed in a stylish tailor-made suit will approach you and ask if they can help you. If you're like most people, you'll probably say no and want to look around first. But soon, you'll realize that you're not quite sure what you're looking for.

This is where the craftsman will step in and introduce you to some new wool fabrics. You'll notice that there are different grades of wool labeled with numbers such as Super 100s, Super 120s, Super 150s, and Super 170s. You may start to feel overwhelmed, wondering what these numbers mean.

These numbers indicate the fineness of the wool fiber used in making the garments, measured by the maximum diameter in micrometers. A higher Super number means that the fabric is going to be softer and finer to the touch and generally feel more luxurious. Lower Super Numbers will usually feel coarser.

While a higher Super number denotes exclusivity to some extent, it doesn't necessarily guarantee quality. This is where your knowledge comes in handy when purchasing any item of clothing. A few bad buys not only cost you more money but also undermine your clothing style and personality.

Did you know that the grade of wool used in your clothing can greatly affect its look, feel, and quality? Keep an eye out for Super numbers when shopping for wool, and choose the grade that best suits your needs and preferences.

It's important to note that the inclusion of elastane to give the fabric a stretch effect is permitted, as well as the inclusion of up to 5% non-wool yarn for decorative effects. For wool blend fabric descriptions, the word Super is not allowed. Still, the S number may be used, subject to the wool content being at least 45%.

Entering a tailor's shop can be a real adventure, but it's a journey worth taking if you're looking for unique and high-quality pieces that fit you perfectly. Don't be afraid to ask questions and gain knowledge about fabrics and their quality to make the most of your investment. A tailored suit, jacket, or pants may cost more upfront, but the value and satisfaction you'll get from wearing them will far outweigh the price.
