American Gothic is inspired by what is now known as the American Gothic House in Eldon, Iowa, Wood’s native town. It portrays a farmer standing beside his daughter – often mistaken by his wife - dressed in a colonial print apron, while the man holds the pitchfork and wears a striped shirt and overalls.
After Wood’s period in Europe where he studied Flemish Renaissance art, he became more interested in midwestern culture and decided to celebrate the rural American values. Although often seen as satirical, American Gothic became one of the most iconic images in 20th-century American art and culture.
